The state government has granted more than $46,000 to continue Broome’s seagrass monitoring project.

Dave Grills MLC said the money would be used to continue monitoring and mapping seagrass beds.

“This important project will continue the good work already done in terms of improving our knowledge of the seagrass community, and furthering our understanding of its environmental importance,” Mr Grills said.

“This phase of the project will build on past work, incorporating light/temperature data to compare to seagrass changes and a fish survey to document which fish species are using seagrass habitat.”

Support for Seagrass Monitoring Project

A series of recently announced grants are helping coastal communities in regional WA maintain and improve the amenity of their local coastal environments.

The Department of Parks and Wildlife and Environs Kimberley project was one of several regional-based local projects to receive a 2013-14 Coastwest grant through the WA Planning Commission.

The $46,708 grant will go towards a project which continues the community monitoring and mapping seagrass beds, and has been welcomed by Mining and Pastoral Region Member Dave Grills MLC.

This phase of the project will build on past work, incorporating light/temperature data to compare to seagrass changes and a fish survey to document which fish species are using seagrass habitat.

“This important project will continue the good work already done in terms of improving our knowledge of the seagrass community, and furthering our understanding of its environmental importance,” Mr Grills said.

The involvement of community groups like Environs Kimberley was essential to the success of such Coastwest projects, giving communities a real sense of engagement and ownership of outcomes.

Coastwest Grants are provided by the WA Planning Commission to support projects that improve the condition and amenity of coastal environments.

This financial year a total of $568,000 was allocated to 21 projects in regional and metropolitan WA.
